When it comes to remodeling a classic Eichler home, what are the first considerations that pop into your mind? For many, it’s what should be preserved and what should be updated.
For John Klopf of Klopf Architecture, these homes offer an exciting challenge. He explains, "The architects that Eichler worked with were some of California’s greatest masters—so you’re starting off with a great house already. It’s either tear it down and lose a piece of history, or reinvigorate it and bring it to the 21st century. I choose the latter."

This is a unique market in Calgary where you’ll find midcentury and vintage home furnishings alongside local handmade goods. Our vendor list this time is pretty stellar and you’ll find a great variety of items: ceramics, furniture, lighting, weavings, vintage records, housewares, paintings, photography, paper goods, woodworking and textiles. Lots of potential for finding the perfect Mother’s Day gift! There will also be food trucks and coffee by Lukes Drug Mart, and on Saturday the Calgary Vintage Volkswagen Association will be joining us with some vintage VWs. See you there May 12 & 13!

Paton has always had an eye for design: "From age five I have been really into cars. You could show me a hubcap and I'd know what it's from," she reports. Though her tastes run through pottery, vintage clothing, posters, and jazz, her collector's instincts have never abated. Here are three tips from a master shopper on how to get your collection of vintage goods underway.
First, find something you're interested in, find out who the maker is, then read everything you can about it. How much do they sell for, are there fakes, when did they start making reproductions? As you get to know a particular object you'll start to see what they tend to cost, how authentic they are, etc. I look up what I'm after on Ebay, on Etsy, sites like 1stDibs, and then specialty sites, too. It's so much easier to research things now with the Internet. Before, I'd spend hours paging through old magazines to learn about mid-century products. During college I'd study at the library and then sit going through old Life magazines and California Home and Design looking at the stories and the ads.
For any of you already familiar with BEX Vintage you also know that we have been selling our mid-century goods by appointment-only for almost 2 years now in Calgary, Alberta. That partially changed in July when BEX was asked to curate an ongoing vintage collection for sale at Bamboo Ballroom Calgary (Instagram: bamboo_ballroom_yyc). This has been such a fun opportunity for us to indulge in picking not only 1950s/60s items, but adding some 70s/80s vintage to our repertoire, along with a healthy dose of glam and Hollywood Regency style. You can find the BEX collection for Bamboo Ballroom at their new Inglewood store, 1218 9 Ave SE, Calgary.
August was all about adding the final touches to the BEX website. We have had many requests for shipping in the last couple years and have kept everything local, but we will now be offering shipping for specific items on our site. For now, larger items will be staying here and can be viewed by appointment and picked up in central NW Calgary.
Big thanks to all our customers and social media followers! You’ve encouraged us to grow, and I hope you enjoy the BEX Vintage website.
